Professional supervision was provided during the execution of the excavation shoring and foundation works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project involved the construction of a three-level underground garage with a footprint of 90\u00d733 m within the VIPnet complex in \u017ditnjak. As the bottom of the excavation pit lay below the groundwater level, the design had to ensure both excavation stability and dry working conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The excavation depth required for the three-level underground garage resulted in an average pit depth of 9.20 m. A primary challenge was the site&#8217;s subsoil, which consisted of gravel extending to significant depths, leading to the expectation of substantial groundwater inflow into the excavation pit. Additionally, it was necessary to ensure the stability of an existing, shallow-founded building owned by the client, located approximately 10.0 m from the planned underground garage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The excavation shoring structure was constructed using a combination of two different technologies: steel I-beams and steel sheet piles. Initially, 6-meter-long steel I-beams were driven into the upper soil layer at 0.50 m axial spacing and interconnected by a capping beam.<\/p>\n<p> This was done along the perimeter of the construction pit on the northwest, southwest and southeast sides of the future building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time as the excavation, rod anchors were installed at the intended depths. At a depth of 5.0 m, a 10-m-long steel girder structure was constructed, which is connected to the steel I-profiles with an overhead anchor beam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensuring work in dry conditions was achieved by the installation of a watertight perimeter structure made of gravel that penetrated 6.0 m below the bottom of the construction pit. As a result, the path of the water was extended, and smaller inflows into the construction pit were realized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The construction pit is divided into 3 separate sections. The sections are divided by partitions, and they are pumped by wells placed under the bottom of the construction pit. In this way, the water level in the construction pit was lowered enough for dry work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excavation work and the opening of the construction pit began in December 2003, which brought the work in the pit into an unfavorable winter period. Furthermore, under that plan, the final excavation and work on the lowest levels (-3) were scheduled for February and March\u2014a period marked by snowmelt and a significant rise in the groundwater level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within 15 days, the groundwater rose by more than 2 meters above average levels (totaling approximately 4 meters from the bottom of the excavation pit) and remained at that level for an extended period of two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In accordance with project specifications, the excavation pit remained flooded until the groundwater receded to a level that allowed work to resume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction of the foundation slab resumed in June 2004, and the slab was completed by September 2004.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Geotechnical investigations were conducted and a design for the shoring of an excavation pit up to 12 m deep was prepared for the construction of an underground garage at the VIPnet business complex in \u017ditnjak, Zagreb.
