Due to neglect and overgrowth, the channel of the Miljašić Jaruga poses a significant risk to safe water flow, thereby increasing the likelihood of flooding. There is a high probability of flooding with moderate consequences—specifically, an occurrence rate of once every two years—whereas the probability of a flood with catastrophic consequences is low, occurring once every 20 to 100 years.
The Miljašić Jaruga estuary reconstruction project entails restoring the watercourse channel, which will reduce sediment accumulation and improve water flow. Additionally, the project includes clearing solid waste from the surrounding marine area within the intervention zone, contributing to environmental preservation and the region’s ecological sustainability. The short-term program of measures focuses on reconstructing the Miljašić Jaruga estuary. At the estuary, the channel is partially obstructed by sediment and overgrown with low-lying vegetation due to the lack of proper bank maintenance. The stone revetment intended to stabilize the channel banks is damaged and has collapsed in places. These issues reduce the flow capacity of the Miljašić Jaruga, causing flow obstruction, bank erosion, and waste material accumulation, as well as water overtopping the crests of existing groynes during high water levels caused by extreme weather conditions. Development of a short-term program of measures, including development of technical documentation for key no-regret construction measures:
- Removal of stone and concrete parts from the east and west wings
- Deepening of the bed at the mouth of the Miljašić ravine
- Construction of the eastern and western wings of the mouth of the Miljašić ravine
