The Sveti Kuzam–Križišće section of the state road replaces the existing Adriatic Tourist Road passing through Bakar Bay and the Municipality of Kostrena, bypassing the urban areas in the eastern part of the city of Rijeka—specifically Kostrena, Bakar, Bakarac, Kraljevica, and Šmrika.
The route of this section lies north of the existing state road D8 (the so-called “Adriatic Highway”), running along the entire northern side of Bakar Bay to the settlement of Hreljin (from chainage 6+355 to 15+802.39), with a total length of approximately 9.445 km. The road features technical specifications that meet a design speed of 100 km/h.
Major structures include: the Tabor Viaduct (length 320 m), the Hreljin Interchange, the Burlica Tunnel (approx. 750 m long), the Kuk Viaduct (approx. 345 m long), the Sveta Trojica Viaduct (lengths: 199 m left, 279 m right), the Križišće Viaduct (239 m long), a reinforced soil wall (from km 13+358.9 to km 13+732), and a gabion wall (starting at km 14+500, length 388 m).
The route of this section of state road D8 (a bypass) was designed primarily across terrain composed of carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite), and to a lesser extent across deposits of flysch, siltstone, marl, and sandstone.
