Landslide and embankment breach reconstruction project in Račinovci after the catastrophic floods in 2014.

During the high-water event in the Sava River basin in May 2014, a levee breach and slope failure occurred in the village of Račinovci, requiring urgent remediation. Geotechnical investigations were conducted, and project documentation was prepared. The reconstruction of the levee was carried out between June 2014 and September 2015.

During the high-water event in the Sava River basin in May 2014—when exceptionally high water levels were recorded, reaching a peak of +1194 cm at the Županja gauging station (an increase of 130 cm over the previous record of +1064 cm set in 1970)—levee breaches and landslides in the surrounding terrain occurred at sites in the villages of Rajevo Selo and Račinovci. Additionally, failures of the land-side levee slope and increased seepage through the levee were observed at several locations. Critical sites requiring urgent remediation included the area near the Teča pumping station in Račinovci, the Topola location downstream of the levee keeper’s house, and locations in Bošnjaci both downstream and upstream of the bridge to Orašje.

This project covered the reconstruction of the Sava River’s left-bank levee near the village of Račinovci.

The works comprised geotechnical investigations, design documentation (main design and detailed design), and supervision.

The total reconstruction section spans 1,920 m; given the phenomena observed during the flood and subsequently during the reconstruction process, the scope included: reconstructing the embankment over a length of approximately 120 m at the landslide site; reconstructing the waterside slope of the embankment over a length of approximately 340 m, extending from the landslide towards the breach; reconstructing the embankment over a length of approximately 120 m at the breach site; and reconstructing the embankment upstream of the breach over a length of 1,300 m on both the waterside and the landside.
