Flood Protection for the City of Metković – Right Bank of the Neretva River

The flood defense project for the city of Metković on the right bank of the Neretva River entails the construction of a system comprising levees, pumping stations, sluices, overflow structures, and an inlet channel. The project involved site investigations, the preparation of the main and detailed designs, as well as revisions to the preliminary and main designs. Design supervision was conducted during the construction phase.

The flood defense project for the city of Metković on the right bank of the Neretva River entails the construction of a system comprising levees, pumping stations, sluices, overflow structures, and an inlet channel.

The route of the project—consisting of a channel and levee in some sections and only a levee in others—is bounded by the railway line; it partially follows the Duvrat channel, continues across the Jerkovac area to the Metković–Vid road, follows the road alignment to the Glibuša watercourse where it changes direction, and then follows the Glibuša watercourse to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project covers the section of the system extending to the BiH border, spanning approximately 6.441 km. The remaining section of the defense levee—approximately 2.4 km long—passes through Gabela Polje in the neighboring country; together with the project section, it forms a functional flood defense unit for the low-lying area of ​​the city of Metković.

The levee is constructed from mixed stone material with a grain size of 0–100 mm and ranges in height from 1 to 3.5 m. The elevation of the levee crest is 4.25 m a.s.l.

…m, a crest width of 3.0 m, and slope gradients of 1:1.5. A bentonite mat was installed on the water-facing side of the embankment as a waterproofing element.

To regulate water levels between the protected and unprotected areas, a pumping station was constructed featuring three pumps with a capacity of 3 × 0.75 m³/s, along with a sluice structure equipped with a sluice gate comprising two openings, each with an area of ​​4.5 m².

Geotechnical investigations—including exploratory drilling and CPT sounding—were conducted during the design and construction phases; these were accompanied by the preparation of the main design (and obtaining the building permit) and the detailed design, as well as—during the execution phase—modifications to the preliminary and main designs and the acquisition of the necessary permits.
